Benedikt Schwarz inks the Ion Age!
They are the ‘IonFans’ tabletop gamers who adore the whole of The Ion Age setting. They adore the stories, models and more made by Alternative Armies and it makes us really happy when one of them creates their own take. Our thanks to Benedikt Schwarz for his hand drawn pen and ink illustrations and permission to share them. Enjoy! We have also tried to find the best 28mm Ion Age and 15mm Ion Age poses which match the drawings if you wish to put them on the table in glorious metal.
Retained Knight: The Retained are life long professionals trained in the ways of war from childhood who owe their fealty to their Baronial Lord, a loyalty that used to be to firstly the Addan Council on New Glastonbury. While not present anywhere in the numbers that the Muster can field the Retained are much better soldiers and are bestowed with finer equipment. Retained wear fully enclosed and power assisted MkV Alwite Armour and make use of Angis Rifles along with many other weapons of the Anvil, Hermit and other families of weapons. Retained officers also use more powered melee weapons such as the Roaz Axe. Retained wear the Prydian uniform of white armour and helmet with deep red shoulder paldrons and detail. Since the outbreak of the civil war, many Retained have altered their armour to their Baron’s heraldic scheme, but all wear the livery of their master on their armour. While not volunteers exactly, the families who send their sons and daughters to the ranks of the Retained do so willingly. Even the most noble entrant begins at the rank of Esquire and passes tests to become a Knight. The most talented soldiers of the Muster can also enter by becoming a Varlet who is outranked even by Esquires.
We think that IA206 Baron Balthazar is the closest 28mm match to this illustration. His helm is off but otherwise very close.
Perhaps again IAF005 Balthazar and Jerome are the nearest in 15mm scale and remember you can choose any pose from the pack on the page.
And now the Shia Khan Empire…
Shia Khan Pioneer: The Pioneers are Legionaries who wear the same reactive glimmer suit and carry the same weapons as their regular counterparts but they are marked out as superior by their additional armour. They wear the Virtus Plating non-powered upper body armour across head, chest and shoulders. Given tasks of greater danger, they are often found in urban battlefields. They use the same formations to the platoon level as other Legionaries. Tougher than their regular counterparts and with greater Elan.
IA144 Pioneer Standing is the closest 28mm miniature to the drawing. This one has a Hydra Laser Shotgun not a Juno Rifle. We do plan to create more Pioneers in the future though!
IAF124 Shia Khan Pioneers with Juno Rifles. Pose 7 in this pack is an exact match. You can select it from all poses on the page.
Get started with Patrol Angis…
